inter-varsity choral festival (IVCF)
The Inter-Varsity Choral Festival (IVCF) is an annual celebration of choral music where university choirs from Ontario and Quebec rehearse together and perform in a combined concert. The festival is hosted on a rotational basis by member choirs.
IVCF was founded in 1949 by the National Federation of Canadian University Students (NFCUS), who suggested that there be a regular competitive music festival in Ontario. The solution was a yearly festival of university choirs. The original participants were McMaster University, the University of Western Ontario, and University of Toronto's Victoria College. The Ontario Agricultural College Union Philharmonic Choral Society and the University of Guelph Chorus joined two years later.
By 1980, the festival had undergone some major changes. Toronto's Hart House Chorus and the Queen's Choral Ensemble were now permanent participants, while the University of Guelph Chorus had dropped out. The competition was restructured into an adjudicated, non-competitive two day festival, and Mary Willan Mason, a notable Toronto writer and daughter of Healey Willan, donated a cup to be presented to the host choir to recognise their efforts in organising the festival.
In 2000, the Hart House Chorus invited other Ontario university choirs to join that year's IVCF. The University of Ottawa Choral Ensemble and Trent University Concert Choir sent representatives and became the fourth and fifth permanent participants in the festival.
Update (11/12/11): IVCF 2012 has been cancelled.
